About Alex Ubatuba

Since Alex’s first experience working with glass, he has dedicated himself to mastering the craft. His journey began with foundational studies at prestigious institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Corning Museum, Penland School of Crafts, and the Pittsburgh Center of Glass. Beyond formal education, Alex embarked on a nationwide exploration, collaborating with talented artisans to enrich his skill sets and incorporating new mediums.

Over the years, Alex has showcased his creations at a variety of art fairs and festivals, steadily gaining recognition throughout the country. His talent has been celebrated on global stages, with invitations to exhibit at renowned events like Art Basel, Art Prize, Envision, and Burning Man. Moreover, Alex has launched solo showcases at Illuzion Glass Gallery and curated solo exhibitions in partnership with esteemed entities such as Tribe 13, The Crown Collection, The Chambers Project, and Everdream Studio.

As of late, Alex has been immersed in the development of a groundbreaking series titled “Living Light Sculptures”. Having drawn inspiration from the ethereal glow of bioluminescent organisms and the mystique of extraterrestrial realms, these works transport viewers into serene and contemplative spaces. Crafting these sculptures is a perilous yet meticulous endeavor, fraught with technical challenges that Alex has honed over the years. Working with borosilicate glass on such a scale requires navigating uncharted territory, often relying on experimentation and innovation.

To accentuate the mesmerizing quality, Alex sandblasts the surface of the glass enhancing its ability to diffuse light. Illuminated from within by addressable LED lights controlled through an app, this process offers a vast array of colors and patterns, pushing these sculptures to transcend mere artwork, becoming immersive experiences. Each display can be tailored to complement and elevate its surroundings, offering a bespoke touch to any environment.
